History of the hotel The Mount Lavinia Hotel is said to have been built for love – and we take ourselves back to 1805… Back then when Ceylon (as Sri Lanka was then called) was still a colony under the Crown, Sir Thomas Maitland was appointed Governor General. 46 years old and single, he fell madly in love with a beautiful dancer, Lovina of Galkissa, the area of rocky coastal headland today called Mount Lavinia. At a time when infringement of rigid morality was heavily frowned upon, the love of this couple flourished in secret. Sir Thomas commissioned the buying of land and building of a ‘small but comfortable’ mansion … on that same headland overlooking the bay, a convenient distance from Lovina’s home. The built house held a secret – there was a subterranean tunnel which began in the wine cellar and ended in a well-opening in Lovina’s own garden and for seven years, Lovina traversed this tunnel to keep her tryst with her lover. After the General left Ceylon in 1811, the idyll ended. Other British Governors came and went, Ceylon gained independence…gradually, the secret romance was remembered and spoken of and the story of Sir Thomas and Lovina endured…. |
